The Programme

The BIOS MATER project is implemented under the Horizon Europeprogramme and is co-funded by the Circular Bio–based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and the European Union.

Project Code: HE GA 101214808

Start Date: 01/06/2025

Completion Date: 31/05/2029

The Project

The BIOS MATER is a European research project aiming to develop and demonstrate advanced bio-based construction products and building elements for the construction sector. By utilizing renewable raw materials and applying the principles of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) and the circular economy, the project seeks to deliver innovative, resilient and sustainable solutions for the buildings of the future.

The Objectives of BIOS MATER

BIOS MATER is built around four key pillars that drive the development of next-generation bio-based construction materials. The project's research approach combines innovation in materials, circular economy principles, market adoption strategies and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD), creating a comprehensive framework for the construction sector of the future.

The Four Development Routes

The BIOS MATER research is organized around four main production routes:

  • Route A: Bio-based core products and sandwich structures for flooring systems.
  • Route B: Bio-based wall panels and flooring tiles.
  • Route C: Façade panels made from natural fibre-reinforced composite materials.
  • Route D: Biodegradable bio-based tiles for dry construction applications.

The BIOS MATER Team

The project brings together 22 partners from 10 European countries, including universities, research organizations, industrial companies and SMEs, working together towards the development of innovative and sustainable construction solutions.

NK Metal's Role

Within theBIOS MATER MATER project, NK Metal contributes its expertise in structural systems and industrial manufacturing.

Our participation focuses on assessing the recyclability of the solutions developed across the project's four production routes, ensuring that circular economy principles and material recovery are integrated into the design of the new bio-based construction products.

Expected Impact

BIOS MATER aims to contribute significantly to the transition towards a more sustainable construction sector through:

  • 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2038.
  • 20% improvement in indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency.
  • Increased market acceptance of bio-based construction products.
  • Expansion of bio-based construction material production across Europe, creating new economic opportunities.
